Perseus and the Celestial Sphere

The ancient Greeks used myths to explain events both natural and social.  In the documentary that we watched, it featured three astronomical components: one event, one constellation, and one star.

Identify and discuss each in the comments area.

6 (na) komento:

  1. EVENT: hunt of the head of medusa
CONSTELLATION: Perseus-celestial blueprint of the myth
    STAR: Al Gol-binary/twin star
-it represents the eye that Perseus stole from the Graiae sisters.
-first, it will be the brightest star that you will see in the sky, then it will be gone.

    NOTES:
    Medusa- fear of all men.
-she can crash a man with just one glance.
-any person who glanced at Medusa will turn into stone. It's purpose is to isolate her to the people.
-she became a gorgon which means the mythical face of death.
GARDEN OF DEATH- the place where the people who turns into stones are.
    >the positive meaning of Medusa's name is 'Guardian'.
*she was once a very beautiful lady. She is one of Athena's priestess. She starts as a symbol of purity. But Poseidon raped her inside the Parthenon.

    *PERSEUS-Vanity and Zeus' son.
    >King Accricius (Vanity's father) locked her inside a tower.
    >King Accricius threw Vanity and Perseus in the sea without anything including foods.
SEFIROS-an Island where Perseus and Vanity is. Zeus protected them and lead them towards the island.
    >Perseus will bring the head of Medusa and give it as a gift to the king of Sefiros to save his mother.

  2. From the documentary that we have watched last Thursday, The clash of the Gods, I have garnered three astronomical components which consists of an essential event, a constellation and a star.

    1. The highlight event, from what I understand, is the dangerous task given to Perseus (In order to save his mother from being married to the king of Serifos - the island where he and his mom stayed after they were thrown into the sea by his grandfather in the fear of losing his throne) which is to hunt Medusa and come back with her head.

    Elaboration :

Medusa (her name meaning 'Guardian') a symbol of purity, was once a virgin priestess of Athena, who dedicated her life in servicing the Goddess of war before Poseidon, the God of Sea took away her innocence and raped her. As a punishment, Athena turned her into a hideous beast with snakes in her head instead of her long dark hair, and had given her the eyes which could turn anybody whoever tried to look at her into stone with just a glance with the sole purpose of isolating her from people.
Medusa's hideous features were inspired from a human corpse which eventually turned her into a Gorgon - the mythical face of death.

    2.
The constellation being 'Perseus' is a constellation in a form of a hero holding out a curved sword and a head of a Gorgon. This constellation was named after the Demi-God son of Zeus (the God of Sky and the king of all the Greeek Gods and Goddesses) and Danae (Daughter of Acrisius - King of Argos), Perseus. The constellation Perseus was named after him in honor of successing the task of hunting and beheading Medusa.

    Elaboration:
Upon accomplishing this task, Perseus have received a small help from his father Zeus. Zeus sent Hermes the messenger (Also one of his sons) and instructed him to bring Perseus a pair of winged sandals which can help him travel across the distance into The Garden of Death, where Medusa have been isolated into and where her previous unsuccessful conquerors have been turned into stones. Perseus have also received three weapons namely: The Helmet of Hades, The Sword of Zeus, and most especially, The Shield of Athena where his success of beheading Medusa lies.

    3. The star, being 'Al Gol' is an eclipsing binary star next to the constellation Perseus. This is the bright star positioned on the severed head of Medusa that Perseus is carrying in the constellation.

    Elaboration:
This Algol star includes the part of Perseus's task where he met the three Graiae sisters with only one eye, and asked them for directions of the location of the Nymphs (The female divinities who are associated with nature) who knows the Island/Garden of Death where Medusa is located.

  3. Based on The Clash Of The Gods documentary, I have formed the answers of the questions as to what event, constellation, and star is essential/influencial to the Myth of Medusa.

    Essential event on the documentary:
Perseus wants and needs the head of Medusa as a barter to the king of Sefiros island in order to free her mother from an unwanted marriage with the said king.

Sefiros island is where Perseus and his mother Danae stayed after King Acrisius, his grandfather, exiled them into the vast dark ocean and left them there to die.
Fighthing off Medusa and Conquering her pernetrative and killing glance/look is a very much hard dangerous task in Perseus part, espacially when not having any weapon to use and just the concept that Medusa's glance will turn him into stone.

    Constellation:
'Perseus constellation' is the constellation of a man holding out a head of a beast.

To obtain success in conquering Medusa, Zeus sent Hermes the messenger to perseus and directed him to hand him winged sandals that will bring Perseus to his destination which is The Garden of Death where Medusa was sent off.

    Star:
'Al Gol' is the peculiar binary star which played an important part in the myth of Medusa. It is the bright star which is located at the head of the Gorgon (Being Medusa) that the constellation Perseus is holding out.
The graiae sisters helped Perseus in order to know the Nymphs whereabouts with the promise of returning them their eye.
Perseus needed the nymphs so he can obtain the weapons that he will use in conquering Medusa. These weapons are: The shield of Athena, Helmet of Hades, and Sword of Zeus.

  4. EVENT: The hunt for Medusa
Medusa was a ravishing woman. She caused envy and every man wanted to marry her. She can't marry because she was a priestess of Athena. She is also the symbol of purity. But Poseidon (God of Sea) raped her in Parthenon, the place of Athena (it is also called the place of the virgin) and lost her virginity. Medusa, who is the victim, in now being accused by Athena to be responsible of the crime that why she turned Medusa into a monster. Her long black hair turned into snakes, her single penetrated look can turn man into stones and she causes a lot of fear. SO, she was sent into a remote island. Eventually she became a Gorgon. It is the physical embodiment of death.

Constellation: Constellation Perseus is located in the northern hemisphere. It contains the Al Gol star, Persues' well known star. It is in the form of a hero (Perseus) holding a sword and the head of Medusa in his other hand.

Perseus is the child of Zeus(Father of all gods and men)and Danae (princess of Argos. Perseus and his mother left Argos without anything because her grandfather Acrisius wanted to kill him. So they stayed in the a place called Serifos. The king of Serifos wanted to marry his mother. To be able to save her mother in an unwanted marriage, he will offer the king the head of medusa. He started his journey. The gods helped him. Zeus, gave him wings. He tricked the Graiae sisters so he can find the nymphs. The nymphs gave him the Sword of Zeus, Helmet of Hades and the Shield of Athena. He successfully killed Medusa and he head back to Serifos with the head of the Gorgon. The king and his grandfather died because they look at the eyes of Medusa. After that, Perseus offered the head of Medusa to Athena.

STAR: Al Gol - Al Gol is the well know star of the constellation Perseus. It is a binary star, and also the brightest star of Perseus located in the head of Medusa (Gorgon). It represents the time he met the Graiae sisters who only have one eye. He stole the eye so the sisters can tell Perseus where the nymphs are so he can get his weapons to use in his journey.

  5. ANALYSIS: Clash of the Gods

    1. Astronomical Event ~ Perseid a meteor shower comes from the direction of Perseus. Similar of how he made of. When Zeus disguised as clouds turned into shower of gold for Danae become pregnant. Simple myth can change person’s beliefs. Believing that there’s something behind any meteor rain which could relate to their lives. In the same way that there is a hidden similarity between Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, and Medusa, a similarity also exists between the sun, symbol of the Ideal and the Gorgon's mask. Although they are both objects of desire, Athena and the sun are unapproachable and terrifying for those who come too close. This danger is illustrated by the Platonic myth of Phaedrus in which the downfall of souls is brought about by an overpowering desire to see the sun. Certain structural elements from the myth of Medusa also reappear in the myth of the Cave fascination, averted eyes, violence inflicted on the philosopher, etc.

    2. Constellation ~ When Perseus slain Medusa, its leads him to his victory. He got his mother back and at the same time the honor for defeating the dready enemy and death. Maybe, it was the main reason of why he belongs in the constellation. Reigning the throne as he holds the heads of the opponent.

    3. Stars ~ As the constellation Perseus appears in the sky with 2 brightest stars symbolize the characters itself. Star Mirphak, the brightest star within perseus presenting himself as hero for defeating Medusa. Star Algol the second brightest position at the right eye of Medusa. Obviously, mirphak is higher than algol, meaning Perseus is the hero over the monster Medusa.

    4. Cultural parts ~ In Christian symbolism, Medusa represents the dreaded enemy and death, and thus becomes an embodiment of the Devil. At first glance, therefore, Medusa's head is very much a representation of the terrifying Other, of absolute negativity. But the things are , some of the warriors back in the Greece war time, they wear an armor with the head of medusa in front. That somehow symbolize brave for fighting. Also some countries admire Medusa for being so beautiful though she was been purnished. Still they use the head in any part of their culture.

  6. :)

    ASTRONOMICAL EVENT:
Medusa, a woman who can clash a man with just one look and she can turn it into a stone. The one who can prove ''look's that kill'' is not really a monster and a Gorgon. Medusa is a ravishing woman that most of the man loves his look. But there was a time when Medusa is on the Parthenon, Poseidon God of Sea raped medusa in the temple of Athena, the symbol of purity. This act was unsacred because it act disrespect to Athena. But instead of punishing Poseidon, Medusa was punished because Poseidon is a God. Athena punished Medusa by giving her a curse to be the scariest Gorgon.

    CONSTELLATION:
The constellation Perseus , Perseus holding the head of the Gorgon Medusa is the sign of winning the battle and saving his mother to the king of Serifos in unwanted marriage. The king of Serifos dare Perseus to give him the Head of Medusa to save his mother and then he have done it and claim as a hero.

    STAR:
The star ‘Al Gol’ which is a binary star that revolves around each other represents the eyes of the graiae sisters that helped perseus to know where the nyhpms are promising them to return their eyes. The graiae sisters is a big help to perseus to know where the nhymps are.

    CULTURAL PARTS:
The cultural part of it was Medusa a mythical creature being the scariest of them all has a big influence in every one like Alexander the Great. He uses the head of medusa in his armor that can describe that he was great. All of us has our own predictions on mythical Gods but then Greeks believe that every God has their own cultural importance of their own
