(5-6 sentences)

Huwebes, Disyembre 12, 2013

Leadership Styles

In order to help  explain the various leadership styles, i'll use a set of descriptive characters which people tend to assume as roles when faced with the task of managing a group of people.

Fielder's Contingency Model Theory

A leader who follows this model can be likened to a Dancing Master.  The leadership style of the Contingency Model as described by Fielder is that of a person who makes decisions in response to the personalities of their members.  Its is a fact that each of us have our own idiosyncracies (unique patterns of behavior) i'm weird, some people are formal and serious, some are happy-go-lucky.  Given these members, how will you make your members follow?  If you try to know your members and make plans out of this, then you are using the contingency model - a Dancing Master.  You are able to dance along the whims of your members

Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership

The Ninja is trained to adapt to situations, this is my rendition of Hersey's and Blanchard's idea of situational leadership.  This model says that a good leader makes plans depending on the situation.  What if there's going to be a celebration event?  How about if it will rain? What if there are possible unforessen situations that can happen during your meeting?  A situational leader rises to each occasion.

Path-Goal Theory

The path-goal model creates Shepherds.  These leaders are able to outline a set procedure or path for his or her members to follow.  Aside from provideing the path, sometimes this leader also herds the members along the way, and in the end provides a reward for having achieved the group's the goal.

***
For today's task:

Write in the comments area your favorite leaders.  One from fiction (book, comic, TV, or movie), and a second one from real life.  What kind of leadership style do each use?

Vital Signs

There are four basic physical attributes that can provide an initial idea of the health status of a person.  These four can be quantitatively measured and have qualitative impacts on the one's physical conditions.  Each have normal ranges that mark a healthy body.  Any increase  above or decrease below the borderline measures can mean damage to physical organs.

The four vital signs are:
  1. Body Temperature
  2. Pulse Rate - 12 - 18 breaths per minute
  3. Respiration Rate - 60 - 100 beats per minute
  4. Blood Pressure
Body Temperature
The normal range for body temperature is 97.8 - 99.1 degrees Fahrenheit / average 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is a measure of the total heat that affects one's body.  Factors include muscle activity, digestion, the flow of blood, and external body temperature.  Certain ill health symptoms such as fever add to body temperature.  Actual illnesses like Gastro Esophageal Reflux disease add to body temperature when excess stomach acid moves from the stomach upwards to the esophagus (thus heating the heart and blood).  Other ill health conditions directly lower body temperature.  One example is hypothermia which is a fatal condition of overexposure to freezing temperatures.

Current environmental conditions cause extreme body temperature and can either lead to Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke.  The first is caused by the decrease of electrolytes in the human body slowly stopping vital internal organs from functioning, eventually leading to coma or death.  The latter is cause by shock to the heart and brain when there's lack of oxygen along with the overwork of both organs during the heat.

Blood Pressure

The normal range for blood pressure is 90/60 mm/Hg to 120/80 mm/Hg.  Each measure is in the form of a fraction like combination.  The first number is the systolic which measures the pressure of blood in the veins when the heart pumps.  The second is the diastolic which measures the pressure of blood in the veins when the heart is at rest.

***

For today's activity:

Aside from the usual post for each meeting, you will find out the following through research and make a summary report on the blog comment regarding the following:

  1. Difference between Pulse Rate and Respiration Rate.
  2. What are the implications of low and high a) Pulse Rate, b) Respiration Rate, c) Systolic), and d) Diastolic.

    Policy Speeches

    Quick Guide for Policy Speeches

    • You only have 8 minutes, maximize your time.
    • Just like any other composition, the basic format must always surface: use an attention grabbing introduction (1-2 minutes 00:00:01-00:01:59), present an organized, rational and well-supported case in your discussion (3-7 min 00:02:00-00:06:59), and remind us with your thesis statement in your conclusion (8th min 00:07:00-00:08:00).
    • Do not forget to sign-post your main proposal in the form of a single clear and concise statement at the between your introduction and your discussion.
    • Examples of sign-posts: "hence I propose before you that..."     "my arguments are 1).... 2)... and 3)...."     "my 2nd argument is foll proof because..."     "this can be attested by...."    These are just examples, I leave you to your own creativity and intellectual insight.
    • Move around, your gestures must be natural.  Quash your self-esteem, shyness, fear issues, YOU HAVE THE BLOOD OF SPARTA!!!
    • Policies must have relevance with readings from units 5 and 6.  Provide additional research to enrich your discussion.

At the very end you will place a short discussion explaining what you have observed in the tour regarding your objects of study.

Research: Your theme is "Point of Interest"  Your object/s of study for the pictures: HRM will either choose food, hotel or resort.  BST will choose either hotel, resort, natural or man-made attraction, or tourist spot.

Picture 2: The Students Bonding During Bonfire Activity

    Discussion:

(as a suggestion in these pictures, the students seem to have "kanya-kanya" behavior as seen in the lobby and at the bonfire, so Katherine in this sample should write about kanya-kanya attitude and why it is wrong attitude.  How it impacts on the students as a community.)

    Sample Discussion:

In the pictures, it can be seen that the students separate themselves into small groups.  Such as in Picture 1.  Instead of socializing with other people, they stay only with the people that they know.  This makes a negative impact on the LCC-C student community because...

    Ethics Project: Dante’s Allegory

For Midterm, we are studying human act itself.  Dante Alighieri wrote three books each detailing the literary and philosophical visualizations of sin and virtue.  These books were
    Inferno”,  “Purgatorio” and “Paradiso”.

Since we are not meeting August 2 and 9 2013, you have ample time to accomplish this monumental task.

    For your project:

    1. RACE TO GET AN AREA OF DANTE'S WORLDS

Form a group of 6-7 members (name your group).
Pick an AREA of Dante below.
    On the COMMENTS
Write your Ethics section schedule (AM or PM).
    Followed by your group name.
    Then your chosen area.
    Then your group members.
FIRST GROUP IN A SECTION TO WRITE THEIR COMMENTS GETS THE AREA.  ONLY ONE GROUP PER AREA PER CLASS SCHED.

    Sample
    PM
    Tropa ni Maica
    Purgatory 2
    Baricuatro, Jamaica
    Pasionela, Rosemarie
    Dacca, Marlon
    Toque, Christine
    David, Grace
    Edep, Rachel

(If this is posted, then no group in PM class cannot chose Purgatory 2 anymore.

    2. MAKE AN IMPRESSIVE VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF YOUR AREA

Research about your area.  Sample, if you chose Purgatory 2.  Research on Dante's Purgatorio

It should show transition (scene change) from one place to the next.
At the end, there should be a reference where you got your information.
If you chose an area of hell,  it should express short details and explanations on the 1) location, 2) sin or sins punished in that area, 3) the corresponding punishment for the sin, 4) one – two historical characters in the area (why are they there?).
If you chose an area of purgatory, it should express short details and explanations on the 1) location, 2) sin or sins punished in that area, 3) the corresponding punishment for the sin, 4) the corresponding virtue to replace the sin, 5) one – two historical characters in the area (why are they there?).
If you chose an area of heaven, it should express short details and explanations on the 1) location, 2) the name of that particular sphere, 3) the virtue of people who get to that sphere, 4) one – two historical characters in the area (why are they there?).

Outputs can be one of any of  the samples, or think of your own unique output.
Samples: a very complex animated powerpoint or prezi presentation, a set of diorama's, a videoed play, a movie maker video, an e-book pdf.

    Think outside the box guys.

    AREAS OF DANTE’S WORLDS
Choose one per group per class schedule.

    Some General Pointers for Presentations

In any subject, whether you're in 1st year or 4th year.

    • Think outside the box - be creative.  The professor will not spoon feed you with the ideas of what to do, it's your call to take action to be impressive.
    • Speak in the proper language.  - Begin in the accepted mode of communication, which is English.  If ever you need to speak in Tagalog, say it in a full sentence Tagalog.  Do not use taglish.
    • Do not do a reading - either of your powerpoint or your note cards.  We all can read, if you're just going to read, just give it to us and sit down.  Explain what's being projected on the screen.
    • Prepare well - Fortune favors those who are prepared (Niccolo Machiavelli) if you prepared well, failure will avoid you, and you can personally lay claim to the excellent output.  If you're prepared, there's really no need for getting nervous.

Rights of the Accused - List of Case Digests

In a democracy, an accussed person has the privilege of protected rights.  It rests on the concept that he or she is merely an accused and not a criminal until guilt has been proven.

PGC students from 1LM3 are tasked to write THEIR individual case digests as pers class instruction.

This list is one of our class academic outcomes which is to create a small archive of jurisprudence relating to constitutional law.  Being able to submit required posts merits additional grades for recitations and possible considerations for the final grade.

This activity will also constitute our meeting for wednesday, March 6, 2013, in order to accomodate 1LM3's         schedule adjustment for that day.

    Psychology and Labor Negotiations

Negotiating a good, albeit either comfortable or luxurious working conditions such as high salary, desirable benefits package and a more than suitable working environment (such as having a gym and well stocked pantry in the office) requires a great skill.

Among the tools that can help a negotiator aside from knowledge of the state's policies and financial conditions is understanding how your employer thinks.

Your tasks in this activity as students of Labor Negotiations are:

    1) Post on the comment area your notes on the film viewing.

    2) How the lessons learned from the film can help you in negotiating for a labor union.
